Opera began 400 years ago in Florence as an attempt to recreate Greek drama. Over the first 200 years of its development, opera changed radically from its original intentions, with the development of the solo aria and the opportunity for extravagant and exotic spectacles of vocal virtuosity and dramatic presentation.
What you will learn in this Seminar ...
- How the Camerata in Florence conceived of a Renaissance experiment
- How Monteverdi took these principles and created coherent dramas
- The developments of Francesco Cavalli and Alessandro Scarlatti
- How Vivaldi created a Venetian form for opera
- How Handel created true drama and feelings in Opera Seria
- The French court with Lully and Rameau
- Why Gluck thought it appropriate to reform opera
