What you will learn in this course:
Why Opera was invented in Florence 400 years ago as an attempt to recreate ancient Greek drama.
Why, since then, the dominant form of opera throughout the world has been Italian.
How to talk knowledgably with your friends about Italian opera.
We will trace how this form of opera grew, changed and developed over four centuries, with particular emphasis on the developments in the nineteenth century.
