What you will learn in this course:
When performing an opera, the words and the music are rarely changed, but the staging can be interpreted in highly individual ways.
As a result, one of the greatest "discussion points" in modern operatic performance is how it should best be staged.
Each week, we will take a famous scene from an important opera and experience several different approaches to its staging and also compare differing vocal and conducting performances.
The basic concept is that by seeing an operatic scene done in a variety of differing approaches, and through discussion of our reaction, our appreciation will be deepened and our horizons will be broadened both visually and emotionally.
Even the most seemingly familiar stage works and operas can benefit from this approach to learning.
