What you will learn in this course:
When two people sing together, the dramatic situation may be one of confrontation, recognition, or – yes! even love. Each of these has different conventions in composition. The Italians were happy to see two voices blending together. The Germans saw duets as conversations, with just one voice featured at a time. There is an infinite variety of examples under the duet umbrella (soprano-baritone, mezzo-bass, etc.). Some of opera’s greatest hits are duets – and we will have lots of fun exploring this territory.
