In this course we will explore how opera presents and re-interprets the powerful myths that underlie Western literature.

Each of the classes will deal with a different mythical tradition or approach to mythology and will feature a series of operatic excerpts on video.


10th September 2019

       The Enduring Power of Greek Myths
       How opera began as an attempt to reproduce Greek drama.

17th September 2019

       With Homer: to Troy and back
       How the Trojan War provides the foundation of all Western literature.

24th September 2019

       The Hero with a Thousand Faces
        How joseph Campbell first charted the journey of the archetypal hero. 

1st October 2019

      The Cradle of Civilisation
      How the "fertile crescent" provides some of the world's oldest myths.

22nd October 2019

        In the Celtic Twilight
       How the knights of King Arthur’s “Round Table” are portrayed in opera. 


 

Back in the 1980s and '90s Iain taught a considerable number of courses

for the U of T's School of Continuing Studies.

He was given their "OUTSTANDING TEACHER AWARD".
